Agents Amplify Architecture: Five Habits for the Agentic Era
AI agents write code faster than ever, but that doesn't necessarily mean teams are shipping faster. Code is no longer the bottleneck. The constraints have shifted to deciding what to build, verifying it, integrating it, and getting it to production.
Agents amplify the systems they operate within. A system with clear boundaries and fast feedback gets faster. A tangled one gets tangled faster.
The engineering principles we learned in the microservices era (reducing cognitive load, building better platforms, and creating paved roads to production) matter more now, not less.
Drawing on my experience delivering agentic sociotechnical systems at Thoughtworks, I'll share five practical habits for agentic development: clarify intent before implementation, shift verification left, engineer the agent’s environment, establish architectural guardrails, and work in small batches. Each comes with a Monday action you can put into practice immediately.
The goal isn't more code. It's better software, delivered faster.
