The Key to the Prisoner's Dilemma
Is architecture a trade-off against business value or the key to unlocking it? Most teams I've worked with treat this as an either/or. Either you invest in the system, or you ship the roadmap. Either the architect wins the argument, or the product manager does. It feels zero-sum because it plays out that way — until the big ball of mud forms and engineers start walking out the door. This talk uses the Prisoner's Dilemma to reframe one of the most persistent tensions in software development. The game isn't what it looks like, and once you see it differently, the path forward changes completely. And then AI arrived and changed the game itself. Building got cheaper. Scope started to feel infinite. But the old tensions didn't disappear — they evolved, and the constraints that replaced them are ones every architect needs to understand.
